There is no doubt that the legalization of sports betting is a major issue in the United States, and the debate has been raging since New Jersey won a Supreme Court case over the issue in May 2018. Since then, various states have considered legislation and even Congress has weighed in. Senators Chuck Schumer and Orrin Hatch have co-introduced comprehensive sports betting legislation, and the House Judiciary Committee will hold a formal hearing on sports betting in September. Several sports betting sites in Australia bills have gained much ground in the Legislature, but there is currently a dual track in progress.
Commissions in sports betting
Sports betting commissions vary. Most commissions are revenue-shared. Some bookmakers pay a flat fee to affiliates for banner placement. Others pay a commission for each new customer referred. Some top sports betting affiliates only carry their banner if a bookmaker pays them a flat rate. Others are hybrid models, combining paid tenancy and commissions. Special tiered commissions or bonuses are often paid to affiliates for certain activities.
Offshore sports betting markets
While the federal government has been averse to legalizing offshore sports betting, a recent study shows that the offshore sports betting industry has a huge handle on the online gambling market. According to H2 Gambling Capital, 73% of all Super Bowl LVI handle was placed with offshore sportsbooks, compared to $1.9 billion at US operators. And that number will grow to more than $30 billion by 2021. The offshore sports betting industry is a lucrative business, and the government and provinces stand to gain multi-million dollar revenues from the industry.
Moneylines
There are several ways to use moneylines in sports betting. Moneylines, also known as point spreads, are odds on each team’s probability of winning a game. These lines are generally moving in both directions. While you can bet on the underdog or the favorite, you should keep in mind that the odds are in your favor. By betting on the underdog, you’ll increase your chance of winning and get a larger payout than on the favorite.
